YOU Track Your Progress.
Before we get started on our first lesson, I’d like you to take this quiz. Be honest. I don’t want to know your grade, This is just to keep track of your progress.
What’s Your I.Q. (Your Intuition Quotient)?
There are many factors (some of which may surprise you) that indicate a strong disposition toward intuitive abilities. The I.Q. test below will help you assess where your inclinations are. Fear not, though, if you don’t get a high score initially. Intuition is as much a basic component in every person’s make-up as thought and emotion are. And with a little practice you can discover (and use a greater part of your intuitive awareness. So, read on and learn about your natural strengths and weaknesses (the areas that will require more of your effort). Don’t forget, self-discovery is what intuition is all about!
Test Your I.Q.!
Instructions: Determine a number value between 1 and 10 for each of your answers (with a score of 10 for ALWAYS, 5 for SOMETIMES and 1 for RARELY. Be HONEST! When you’re finished, check your total score. Then take a look at the ‘Point-by-Point Program to Increase Your IQ’ and begin your personal program for intuitive development.

SCORING YOUR I.Q. TEST
121-180 points: congratulations! If you reached this score, then you have had enough intuitive experiences to have already become familiar with that voice inside you. You also embrace the qualities that give you the strength to act on your intuition. If you continue to strive in making these personal qualities and intuitive practices real every day, then you will bring yourself ever-closer to a greater realization of success and happiness in your life (both through your intuitive guidance and by your confidence and joyful sense of self).
61-120 points: Falling into this point range means only one thing; you’re pretty close to normal as far as life’s ups and downs have taken you. If you recommit now to discovering the strength of your spirit, and to the practices of listening to your intuitive voice, then you will be surprised at the abundant and new opportunities that become available to you.
18-60 points: Don’t worry! NO matter what your score was, the situation is never hopeless. It may seem that your intuition has been eluding you all your life, but it’s actually much more likely that YOU have been ignoring (or even suppressing) IT! Still, there is work to be done’ both in your intuitive exercises and in your self-discovery. Fear not, though! With a little bit of effort, consistency in behavior and some changes in attitude, you will be able to discover a part of yourself that can take you to greatness!
A POINT-BY-POINT PROGRAM TO INCREASE YOUR I.Q.
Read through each point and consider the steps that you can take to begin your program of intuitive development. Pay special attention to your low scoring questions to determine the areas that may require special effort on your part.
PART I. YOUR INTUITIVE PERSONALITY PROFILE
While the qualities discussed in Part I of the test may not SEEM to have anything to do with being intuitive, they are as important as any technical skill you can develop. For they are the attributes that allow you to be truly guided by your inner voice. In the end, the real difference between nonintuitive people and those who are highly developed is not how much they PERCEIVE their intuition, but how much they listen, trust and act upon their intuitive perceptions.
Anyone with enough determination can be taught a skill, but how easy is it to teach someone determination? Ultimately, those who won’t listen to their intuition are much worse off than those who can’t, because those who can’t can learn!
So, take some time now to consider the traits which you can hone and the steps that you can take to better improve your intuition (as well as your life)!
- Do you consider yourself creative and/or imaginative?
People who are creative (who can ‘think outside the box’) tend not limit themselves exclusively to analytical thought. Over-analysis of any information, especially intuitive, can prohibit our ability to take action. After all, one of the best ways NOT to DO something is to keep thinking about it! If you tend to over-analyze the decisions in your life, become more aware of this habit as it’s happening. Practice making the little decisions throughout your day more spontaneously, more intuitively, by determining what you feel (not what you think) and then act upon it.
Intuitive messages often take the form of ideas or IMAGES that suddenly pop into the mind through the IMAGE-ination. If you’re already imaginative, your ability to recognize those images strongly supports intuitive experiences. Don’t worry, though, if you didn’t score highly on this one. We’ll look at some exercises later to ‘tweak’ your imaging skills. - Do you feel confident, self-aware and independent?
Being independent is not the same as being a loner, being aggressive or being selfish. It simply means that you trust yourself enough to know what’s best for you and that you have the courage to see it through. If you scored well on this question, it simply means that you probably won’t be intimidated when choosing what your intuition tells you to do (even when those choices may be challenged by well-meaning others). If your score was low, begin now to BELIEVE that you have a powerful truth inside you. And believe in yourself! The more confident and self-accepting you are, the more you will be willing to listen to your own inner voice. And, NOT coincidentally, the more you listen to your intuition, the more confident you will become. - Are you open-minded, curious and eager to learn new things?
The very nature of intuition requires you to perceive information that doesn’t come to you through your physical senses. You must open your mind to accept a concept of reality that is larger than the physical self and perhaps even larger that space or time. Even if you are already open-minded, be sure to maintain a strong curiosity about things that may be unseen and perhaps even unseeable. And seek to discover new worlds where ever you go! - Do you consider yourself flexible, spontaneous and willing to change?
Spontaneous intuition happens when it happens! If you are stuck in a rut with your eyes set only on a predetermined agenda, you will not be free to step upon a new path or perceive an intuitive message that may have the potential to guide you to greatness. You may certainly succeed in checking off every single item on your list of things to do , but will you also check in with every unplanned opportunity as well? To increase your flexibility, change up your day a little and stay conscious of how you meet with obstructions to your schedule. Instead of becoming angry just ask yourself, “What or whom am I supposed to find on this detour?” If you look for the benefit, you WILL find it. Even if it’s simply a few extra minutes with yourself while waiting in a long line, maybe it’s just a chance to catch your breath and center yourself for a moment. Always assume that there is a purpose in every little event and, seek to find it. - Are you aware of your surroundings and sensitive to others around you?
Building a sensitivity to your environment and to the people within it is a large step forward in your intuitive development. Whether or not you consider yourself perceptive already, it is a good idea to practice it as a conscious activity on a regular basis. So, try this exercise several times a week: When you walk into a room, look around you for a moment and ask yourself what you ‘sense’ about the people there or about the room itself. Remember, this is a discernment of what you feel (not your emotional feelings but your perceptive ‘feelings’). It’s not necessary to analyze or draw conclusions. Just notice what you perceive, and then go on about your day. This exercise will help you build the habit of looking for information that isn’t immediately apparent through your observation, information that comes from your intuitive voice. - Are you wiling to take action in areas of your life that may be untested and untried?
Having the courage to go somewhere you’ve never been before is essential in learning to work with your intuition, first in order to move in the direction of trusting your intuitive experiences and second in order to move into a new, and possible challenging direction as guided to you by your intuition. This does not refer to how fearless you are. Everyone is afraid at some time in their lives. This courage is more about how willing you are to confront your fears, especially when pursuing a compelling course of action which may not have a foreseeable result. So, don’t be afraid to listen to your intuition, and don’t be afraid to get to know your fears. Meet them, and you will discover that they could be the very maps to your life’s destinations. - Are you aware of your body and its needs? Do you honor them?
Your body talks to you all the time, giving you messages about all of the areas of your life – physical, mental, emotional and intuitive. It can give you headaches when you have too many worries on your mind. It can give you indigestion when you eat foods that aren’t good for it. And when you’re depressed, your immune system can get depressed, too, leaving you tired and more susceptible to colds and flu. Your body can give you intuitive messages as well. (One author and famously successful investor, George Soros, could tell that there was something wrong with his portfolio when he got a backache!) Yet many people ignore most messages from their bodies, putting their physical needs far below career, family and even household needs. How prepared do you think you will be when your body wants to provide an intuitive insight if you’re not in the habit of listening to it for even the most obvious requests, such as rest, good food and exercise? Begin now to take notice of what your body tells you. If you’re not sure of the message, close your eyes and ask it. You don’t need to be able to interpret every sign right away. Just give yourself a chance to connect with this valuable source of information, energy and life. - Do you possess a willingness to know and grow, even when the pursuit of your growth may not necessarily take you down the easiest path?
When you make listening a habit and do what your intuition tells you, what your TRUTH tells you, you will discover a greater happiness, and your life will be filled with a general sense of well-being. But this happiness doesn’t always translate as easiness. There will definitely be times when what you ‘hear’ from your intuition will not be what you want to hear. It may be something as drastic as the need to leave a toxic relationship or as basic as the need to take an art class or cut fats out of your diet. There are many truthful perceptions about which you are already aware but have chosen to ignore or do little about just because it’s easier to do so, but often staying on ‘easy street’ really only keeps you between a rock and a hard place.
It doesn’t take a genius to understand that if you want to be ABLE to know your truth, you must be WILLING to know your truth (and willing to act upon it as well). To have an active pursuit of your intuitive voice you must be honest with yourself and look for your truth in everything, whether or not it leads you down the path of least resistance. To get some practice with this, take at least one small step each day in a challenging action which you have been avoiding, an action that honors your commitment to making your truth real in your life. With each passing day take another step forward and another. Before you know it, you’ll be happy to leave ‘Pleasantville’ for a place called joy. - Do you take your commitments seriously enough to embrace them with enthusiasm?
Though this might seem like a contradiction to the qualities in question four, it only SEEMS that way. Being flexible and spontaneous doesn’t mean that you live life without commitments. Indeed, when you commit yourself to listening to your intuition, you are actually making a commitment to being (and staying) flexible enough to act on its directives. Sometimes those directives may cause a logistical challenge to keeping other commitments. For instance, you may be a devoted single mother who is also feeling compelled to take an art class which is only offered when your kids are at home. If you enthusiastically embrace both commitments, you will happily seek (and discover) options that will satisfy both commitments. If, on the other hand, you hold your commitments solely out of obligation and duty, you will lose all sense of choice. And when you feel you have no choice, then the only activities you will pursue will be those which make you feel the most urgent or the most guilty. Listening to what your intuition tells you to do will become a distant dream, and every obligation you meet will be filled with resentment.
If you feel that your present commitments drag you down and depress you, there are two things for you to do. First and foremost, see your choice in everything. When you don’t recognize that you have a choice in every action, you abdicate the power to make choices on your own behalf. Once you recognize that you always have options, consider what you need to do to exercise those options in the best way possible for all concerned. Redesign those commitments that you find obstructive in terms of scheduling and logistics. Most importantly, evaluate those commitments that bring you the greatest emotional strife and those which stand most in conflict with your commitment to yourself and to your sense of well-being. Determine the action that you need to take to create a more compatible integration between your choices for others and your choices for yourself. - Do you live with integrity? In other words, are you honest with yourself and others in all matters, little and large?
If intuition is the voice of your truth, then in order to make it a priority, you must first hold your truth in high regard and seek it in all that you do. If you have spent your life in the habits of denial or avoidance, making choices the FEEL wrong (ultimately hurtful) in relationships and behavior, then you have already created a certain comfort level with falsehood. Don’t make it easy for you to lie to ourself. Instead, make it important to discover your truth and to live it!
PART II. YOUR INTUITION IN ACTION - Have you ever had hunches about significant opportunities, situations or events before they occurred?
These hunches happen to everybody with varying degrees of strength and frequency. Whether or not this is a part of your history already, you can build a greater receptivity if you only stay more actively conscious of these little insights that pass through your mind spontaneously. (Later we’ll take a look at some techniques that turn these spontaneous hunches into self-direced intuitive experiences.) Carry a small notebook with you, and jot down a word or two whenever these “hunches” occur to you. Even if the subject matter is about mundane tasks and seemingly unimportant events, staying alert for these hunches in order to make a note of them will keep your intuitive ‘radar’ sharp and will make you more sensitive to further feelings of expectancy. - Have you ever had a troubling ‘feeling’ or physical discomfort when pursuing a choice that you KNEW wasn’t in your best good?
Believe it or not, some feelings of discomfort – both emotional and physical – are good. They are signs that you have not honored the voice of truth inside you. If the level of discomfort is pervasive in your daily life experience, then you have disregarded this truth for too long and in too significantly a way. Take a moment every night to consider in your journal any event or activity about which you were uncomfortable. Think about why you made those choices, what you might have done differently and how you could handle a similar situation in the future. - Have you ever had goose bumps, butterflies in your stomach, chills or other physical sensations, especially when having vague or undetermined feelings of anticipation?
Although some of these physical sensations may be a little uncomfortable, they are not like the nagging and often profoundly troubling feelings as discussed in question two. Whether you’re conscious of these physical reactions now or not, try to become more aware of your body and the little sensations that move through it every day. When you notice them, make a note about them in your journal and about the thoughts or circumstances which were occurring at those times. - Have you ever actively turned in with your intuition in times of change, opportunity, confusion or ambivalence?
Even if this is not a habit which you have already cultivated, it is never too late to start. Before making important decisions, or when you have several options before you, take a few moments to quiet your mind and ask for an image. It doesn’t have to be AN ANSWER, just an idea, an image or a symbol. You don’t even have to know what it means. Just notice it and put it in your notebook. Wait a day (or a few hours) and ask again. See what images are brought to you and how they speak to you of your feelings and the possibilities that lie before you. - When you do experience your intuitive voice, do you try to be conscious of the methods it uses to speak to you (visual images, gut feelings, physical sensations or emotions)?
This is perhaps the easiest practice to pursue in your daily life. If you’re already staying alert for your intuitive moments, all you have to do is notice HOW they happen as well. Becoming a familiar with the intuitive language your spirit uses helps you know where you have the most receptivity in future work with symbols and, if you wish, with other spirit communications. - Have you ever anticipated little, daily occurrences before they happened (such as phone calls, emails, chance meetings, scheduling changes, etc.)?
If you haven’t’ noticed a facility with this yet, it is very easy to put into practice. Before you leave the house in the morning, just close your eyes and “look” for the faces you’re going to see that day. Take a moment to intuitively anticipate your number of emails or who’s on the phone before you answer. If you don’t have a lot of accuracy when playing these little games of intuition, don’t despair. Intuitive messages with strong emotional content or more substantial significance are usually easier to read because they are more powerful and penetrating in your experience. The ‘who’s calling’ exercises are to an intuitive as finger exercises are to a pianist: They keep the muscles flexed, but will rarely be as important (both in execution and in the experience) as the symphony will be. - Are you ever able to sense other’s feelings and concerns without having been informed of them directly?
Emotional sensitivity is only one step removed from intuitive sensitivity, and in many ways the two are connected. Open yourself to sensing what others around you may be feeling – at your office, your home, even in the grocery store or on the bus. You don’t have to give this (or any of these other practices) a lot of your time. Just moments will do. Simply ‘touch in, acknowledge what you perceive, and release. And don’t worry about ‘catching’ others’ feelings. You don’t have to drown (or even swim) in someone’s emotional pool to sense the feelings that are washing over him. - Are you as willing to act upon the directions of your intuitive voice when it asks you to do something challenging as much as you are when it directs you toward something pleasurable and fun?
We must embrace our lives with joy and with purpose, and each is as important as the other. Often, though, we choose only what is easiest. And unfortunately, the path of least resistance is rarely joyful or purposeful. Make a commitment to choose one little thing each day that your inner voice directs you to do to make your life better, and choose one little thing each day that your intuitive voice tells you to do to create joy in your heart. If either or both of these directives require broad-sweeping change or large action, at least determine one little step you can take in each and do them – every day!.
